History & Structure of the Guild

The Connecticut Psychotherapists’ Guild, LLP, was founded in 1995 by five therapists who had become concerned about the impact of managed care on psychotherapy.  Initially, all belonged to managed care organizations and had some hope that managed care might work well and make therapy available to more people.  But their experiences convinced them that the profit motives of insurance companies did not fit with the essential values of psychotherapy.  They decided to form an organization of independent therapists who shared their values and concerns.

The Guild is organized as a limited liability partnership (hence the “LLP” following our name) by the five founding members.  They constitute the steering committee which administers and sets policy for the Guild.  All public information and advertising issued by the Guild is written and approved by the steering committee. Individual members are free to advertise their affiliation with the Guild and to speak out about their reasons for participating in the Guild.

About forty independent psychotherapists are currently members of the Guild.  Each is committed to the principles of the Guild.  Each pays $80 per month to support the public education and advertising of the Guild.  All active members are included in the Guild directory.  Guild therapists maintain separate, independent practices.  Membership in the Guild does not involve any clinical affiliation among therapists.  Each therapist sets his/her own policies.

Many Guild therapists will work with you to obtain whatever insurance coverage is available for your therapy.  Some provide psychotherapy through insurance company plans; some do not.  You should feel free to talk to your therapist about the advantages and disadvantages of using whatever coverage you have.

No profits are made by the Guild and there are no shareholders.  Although insurance companies usually do not disclose the terms of their financial arrangements with providers, we believe that full disclosure of all financial arrangements is important.  Click here to see the contract between the Guild and individual therapist.
