| Many therapists combine methods and theoretical approaches. Competent therapists realize that each individual situation is unique, and use the training and understanding they have developed to help individuals find new solutions to their problems.
It is also important to note that psychotherapists come from a variety of professional backgrounds. The nature of the professional degree (MD, MSN, MSW, PhD, etc.) does not determine the skill level, theoretical approach or kinds of techniques a therapist might use (see section on Types of Professionals Who Practice Psychotherapy).
